Fabric and Sewing Adhesives

From tacky glue to body tape, the evolution of fabric and sewing adhesives is as impressive as their functions. The earliest sightings of glue, one of the most popular forms of fabric and sewing adhesives, date back to 4000 B.C. From excavated burial sites, archeologists discovered clay pots prepared with glue from tree saps. It wasn’t until around 1750 that the first patent was issued in Britain. The earliest notions of fabric and sewing tape occurred in 1845. Surgeon Horace Day applied rubber adhesives to strips of fabric in the construction of a new invention called Surgical Tape. Similar to today’s usage of fabric and sewing adhesives, the earliest forms of glues and tapes were often used to stitch and mend garments.
