Deadstock

Often used in corsetry, boning refers to notions used in the shaping and design of corsets. During the 17th and 18th Centuries, corset were often heavily boned with very little (if any) room between bone grooves. Toward the end of the 18th Century, giant reeds or whalebone had become the go-to boning materials. By the early 19th Century, corset boning was commonly done with wood, bone, ivory, and baleen (whalebone). By the 20th Century, the demand for lighter weight, functional corsets called for far less restrictive boning materials. Today, steel, metal and fabric-covered options comprise some of the pliable boning materials the corset industry has ever seen.
