When it comes to womenswear, Mood constructed its selection of shoulder pads with the belief that, where the likes of dresses, jackets, and coats are concerned, sometimes the smallest addition makes the biggest difference. Historically, shoulder pads have had a knack for taking basic womenswear pieces to glamorous, standout places. Originally popularized in the 1930s by designer Elsa Schiaparelli, shoulder pads first appeared as semicircle or small triangle-shaped, and stuffed with wool, cotton, or sawdust. In the 1980s, shoulder pads had come to define the “power-dressing” fashion statement of the era. By 2010, many top retailers featured shoulder pads on no less than half of all women’s tops and blouses.
