Not only are pins and needles two of the most imperative components of sewing, they also have histories that date further back than many of the apparel industry’s most revered items, including pants and shoes. Coincidentally, both the sewing pin and the sewing needle were hand-made out of bone over 17000 years ago by Western Europeans and Central Asians. Arguably the hardest working pair in the world of sewing, sewing pins were primarily used to hold clothing or pages of books together, while its perforated counterpart, the needle, did the work of gripping and sewing the thread. By the beginning of the 19th Century, sewing pins and needles had reached a popularity rivaled only by that of today’s sewing machine.
