Lame fabric is often used in dance clothing, formalwear, costumes, and anything else that requires a touch of sophistication and intrigue. Woven or knit, with thin ribbons of metallic yarns, Lame is easily distinguished from guipe where the ribbons are wrapped around a fibre yarn. Considered a hybrid fabric, Lame is produced from a combination of metallic fibers and polyester or nylon fibers. This fabric is not completely metal but rather metal coated plastic or yarn fibers are most common. Such a blend is ideal as the metal fibers will not tarnish.

Stemming from early mariner wear, cottons, canvases and sail cloths were among the first waxed materials in preliminary rainwear. As waxed materials feature natural contents both the fiber and wax, a reapplication of wax may be required throughout the garments lifetime.
