Q&A

Hi! I have never sewn with crochet lace fabric and I was wondering the best tension and stitch length to use, or any helpful tips for sewing this type of fabric on a machine. I want to make the Harper Plisse Dress with it for a concert :) Thanks!
Hello Emily . How exciting that you're making the Harper Plisse Dress with crochet lace for a concert—what a beautiful combination! Sewing with crochet lace can be a bit tricky, but with the right settings and some extra care, it can be a wonderful fabric to work with. Here are some tips to help you get started: 1. Tension & Stitch Length Tension: Start with a medium tension (around 4-5 on most sewing machines). Crochet lace is delicate and a bit open, so you don’t want to pull the fabric too much while stitching. Adjust the tension as needed—if you notice puckering or loose stitches, fine-tune it to achieve an even stitch. Stitch Length: A longer stitch length (around 2.5 - 3mm) works best for crochet lace. This helps avoid making the fabric too stiff or causing too much stress on the delicate threads. 2. Needle Choice Use a universal needle (size 75/11 or 80/12), which is ideal for lightweight fabrics like crochet lace. If the lace is particularly open or delicate, you might want to try a ballpoint needle to avoid snags or damage. 3. Stabilizing the Fabric Crochet lace can be delicate and may shift or stretch as you sew. It’s a good idea to use a lightweight stabilizer (like tear-away or wash-away stabilizer) on the back of the lace to keep it stable while stitching. You could also baste the lace to a lightweight cotton or muslin fabric to help with stability before sewing your final stitches. 4. Sewing Tips Pinning: Use small pins or fabric clips to avoid damaging the lace, as traditional pins can create holes. Be gentle when pinning so the lace doesn’t stretch out of shape. Seam Finish: Since crochet lace can fray or unravel, it’s a good idea to serge the seams or use a zigzag stitch to finish the raw edges. This will help prevent the fabric from coming apart at the edges over time. Pressing: Be very gentle with pressing the lace. Use a low heat setting and place a pressing cloth between the iron and the lace to avoid damaging the delicate fibers. 5. Sewing Tips for the Harper Plisse Dress If the lace is particularly open or sheer, consider underlining it with a lightweight fabric (like a soft cotton or silk) to provide structure and prevent too much see-through effect. Avoid heavy seams: The crochet lace already has texture, so you might want to avoid heavy seam allowances or anything too bulky. Opt for fine, delicate finishes to keep the look soft and flowing. I hope this helps.
