2018 was an interesting year for fashion fabrics. From mesh and lace ensembles in the fall to velvet and fur garments for summer and spring, designers didn’t allow the weather to dictate their collections. Let’s take a look at the most fashionable fabrics from 2018.
Fringe
The long and short of it is that fringe took 2018 by storm. Alice + Olivia recreated an oldie but a goodie with an 80’s style moto jacket that featured fringe on the sleeves, while Norma Kamali used fringe on literally everything. Duru Olowu and Marchesa Notte had similar ideas, using fringe in tiers to create more depth and movement, and Sachin & Babi went for a more simple style by attaching fringe to the hem of the asymmetrical shoulder of a stunning red dress.

Plastic
Plastic was utilized for everything from raincoats to blouses and trousers in 2018. Balmain creates an entire ensemble, featuring a button up shirt, a trend coat, and pants, from sheer plastic. Vionnet and Christian Siriano both feature dresses of black plastic, while John Galliano and La Perla both showed jackets.

Sequins
This year, fashion was all about standing out. Alena Akhmadullina featured a skirt set and leggings that were made from matte, reversible sequins, although most other designers didn’t get as funky as that. Dolce & Gabbana showed a beautiful jumper with roses, while Sachin & Babi went for a simple patch on the sequined dress. Johanna Ortiz’s slip dress was made even more ornate with a 3D flower cinching the waist, while Moschino spliced an opulent sequined ballgown with a simple fuschia cocktail dress.

Sheer
See through and sheer fabrics were quite popular for 2018, both as an overlay or the main fabrics. Elie Saab featured a beautiful sheer overlay over a maxi dress, while Juicy Couture’s maxi dress was simply sheer. Both Pamella Roland Naeem Khan showed sheer ball gowns, and Orla Kiely utilized sheer overlay to create simple flounce sleeves on a sweet dress.
