Scrunchies and headbands have been everywhere recently and whether you’re grabbing some new fabrics or just looking for a stash-buster, this DIY is quick and easy! Since the fabric in a scrunchie gathers anyway, it can be made with either a woven or a knit, while the headband is best reserved for stretchy fabrics. Want to embellish your new accessories? Take a look at Mood’s gorgeous vintage trims and add them to your cut-out fabric before sewing!

How to Sew a Scrunchie
1. Cut a strip of fabric 3″ wide by 22″ length (you can change the length if you want to, just depends on what look you are going for. More length = more gathered scrunchie, less length = less gathered scrunchie).

2. Press ¼” inward on one end of the scrunchie.

3. Fold your rectangle in half, pin, sew with a ¼” seam allowance, and press.

4. Grab your safety pins and put them on both ends of the elastic. Thread one through the tube.

5. Tie elastic ends or sew them together using your machine.

6. Insert the raw edge of your scrunchie inside the folded side, then pin. Hand sew or machine stitch shut.

7. Bam! You have a new fabulous scrunchie.
How to Sew a Headband
1. Measure your head.
2. Create a rectangle that is the circumference of your head and the height of 5″. After you have both measurements add about 4-6″ to the length for the ties.

3. First, prepare your fabric by ironing it.
4. Cut one piece. Fold the rectangle upward in half, fabric faces together.
5. Sew using a stretch stitch along two raw edges, leaving one short edge open.

6. Turn right-side-out, press the raw edge inward, and topstitch along the ends. You can use your presser foot as a guide or just do a ¼” topstitch.
