If anyone knows two things about me, its that I love Fall and I love crafts. What better way to celebrate this delightfully chilly weather than with some fun DIY’s? I’m going to show you three fantastic ways to up your fall decor game this season, using stunning fabrics and very little additional materials.
In this blog, we will be making a basket of fabric flowers, a super funky fabric wreath, and a fun little pumpkin pillow.
Fabric Flowers
First, let’s start with the flowers! These are so easy to make and take almost no time at all! I went in a more whimsical direction with these two striped knits; Black and Neon Orange Striped Hacci Baby Knit and Rust and Black Striped Sweater Knit. I chose these fabrics because of the construction of the flowers. You want a flexible stretchy fabric to give that “petal” appearance.
Here’s what you’ll need and a breakdown of each step:
- 1/4 yard of each fabric
- Thread
- Sewing Needle
- Floral Wire
- Pattern Paper
- Compass
- Scissors
- Basket
- Foam Block
Steps to make your flower basket:
1. Using your compass, create a 4″ diameter circle on your pattern paper. Use this template to cut out 5 identical circles from your fabric.
2. Once your circles are cut, fold one of your circles in half twice to make a quarter circle. Using your hand needle and thread, weave your needle in and out to create a crimping effect along the non-folded edge as shown above.
3. Pull thread tightly to create your first petal, as shown in the first photo above. From there, using the same thread you used on your first petal, repeat the process to create 4 more.
4. Once you have made your five petals, attach the first petal to the last petal to create a ring shape.
5. To create your flower center, cut a 5″ x 3″ strip of fabric.
6. Fold your strip of fabric in half long ways. This part is optional, but you can cut snips along the folded edge about 1/4″ apart to add some texture to your flower center. Then, roll your strip so it looks like the last photo above.
7. Place your roll in the center of your flower and attach using your needle and thread.
8. Using your floral wire, poke through the center of your flower and loop back around so the wire sticks out of the bottom at both ends. Twist your wire to secure it, and strengthen the stem of your flower.
That’s all there is to it! Repeat as many times as you wish to make a bouquet. Finish the look by sticking your flowers in a foam block that you can place in a basket, pot or centerpiece on your Thanksgiving table!
Fabric Wreath
This DIY is easily my favorite fall decor I’ve ever made! It is literally two thing. Fabric and a wreath ring! SO simple! For this project, I used the Gold Crushed Nylon Organza, Fire Orange Pintuck Satin, and Metalic Copper Stretch Lame. I chose these fabrics because I felt they best represented the changing fall leaves in both their color and texture.
Here’s what you’ll need and a breakdown of each step:
1. 1 yard of each fabric
2. Wreath Ring
3. Scissors
Steps to make your fabric wreath:
1. First, start by either cutting or ripping your fabric into 8″ x 2″ strips. I prefer the ripped method because it gave the wreath a more rustic, leaf-like appearance.
2. Next, simply tie your strips of fabric around the wreath ring as shown above.
3. Create a pattern by alternating the fabrics.
4. Make sure all of the knots are facing downward.
That’s all there is to it! Just a bunch of knot tying, but it’s totally worth it! Look how festive those colors are!
Pumpkin Pillow
How adorable is this pillow? This Adobe Brown Crushed Velour combined with this Wide Corinth Oatmeal Linen Scrim just brought that warm feeling of a hayride with burlap sacks and miles of pumpkin fields to mind. I will admit working with a knit and woven together was a bit tricky, but with the right amount of pins and care, it totally works!
Here’s what you’ll need and a breakdown of each step:
1. 1/2 yard of each fabric
2. Thread
6. Pencil
7. Pins
8. Scissors
Steps to make your fabric wreath:
1. Start by freehand sketching a pumpkin shape onto your tracing paper. You can make it wide or tall or round depending on the dimensions you want your pillow to be. I decided to make a long landscape pillow for my project.
2. Use your pattern to cut your pumpkin. Be sure to pin down the paper so it doesn’t slip during cutting.
3. Using the remainder of your pattern paper, measure an 18″ x 12″ rectangle to cut out the pieces to make your pillow.
4. Pin Your pumpkin shape to the center of the linen.
5. Using your sewing machine top-stitch your pumpkin 1/4″ from the edge.
5. Next, pin the two halves of your pillow with the right sides facing each other. Sew the edges of your pillow together using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Be sure to leave a large enough gap on one side, so you can fit the stuffing into your pillow.
6. Take your batting and fill your pillow to your desired firmness. If you prefer a firmer pillow, you will need more stuffing. If you like a softer pillow, use less stuffing.
7. Once your pillow is stuffed, roll the raw edges of the opening into the pillow. Pin in place and using your hand needle, create a blind stitch or invisible stitch, close up the remainder of the pillow. That’s all there is to it!
I hope you’ve enjoyed these simple fall DIY projects! These will bring a festive feeling to any home! Let us know how these worked out for you in the comments. Happy sewing, and happy holidays!
