Faux fur fabric is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to mimic the look of real fur. It's soft, lavish, and stylish. There are many advantages to using faux fur. It's ethical, budget-friendly, durable, hypoallergenic, and relatively easy to work with. The only main downsides to working with this fabric is that it can be messy, bulky, and it doesn't offer much breathability. Below are some frequently asked questions about sewing with faux fur.

Frequently Asked Questions About Faux Fur Fabric

What is faux fur made of?

Most of the time, faux fur is made of polyester and acrylic blended yarns attached to a fabric backing.

The terms "faux fur” and "synthetic fur” are often used interchangeably. In some cases, faux fur refers to any fur-like fabric that mimics real fur, while synthetic fur refers to faux fur made from synthetic fibers.

Is faux fur high quality?

Some faux fur is high quality while some is not. At Mood Fabrics, we offer quality materials to ensure exceptional outcomes.

How do I clean faux fur?

Most faux fur can be cleaned by hand with a mild detergent and water, but follow the specific instructions of the material you're working with.

Supplies Needed with Faux Fur Fabric

While working with faux fur fabric, you'll want to take into account that it's thick and may require some special materials. You'll need:

  • Scissors: You'll want extra-sharp scissors, and faux fur is thick and can be tricky to cut through.
  • Sewing Needle: For faux fur, you'll need a study sewing needle made for handling thicker materials. We recommend a 100/18 or 100/16 universal needle.
  • Thread: You'll also need a thick thread when working with faux fur. We recommend polyester or nylon thread.
  • Pins, clips, and pin cushion: Use large pins or clips to keep your fabric in place while sewing. A pin cushion provides a safe place to store your pins.
