Snap Buttons

Though it may not be clear exactly who is to be credited for inventing them, one thing is certain: snap buttons have a history of being some of most versatile, widely-used button styles. Snap buttons first appeared in Europe around 1840. Primarily used on theatrical costumes, snap buttons were usually sewn on the outside of garments to hold and quickly remove pieces like ruffles and collars. By the early 1890s, snap buttons began to make outerwear appearance on gloves and men’s work pants. By 1903, lead by German manufacturer, Prym, snap buttons had become one of the leading clothing fasteners in the apparel industry.
