What is Couture Fabric?

Couture, or Haute Couture, is a French term that translates to “high dressmaking.” Although Couture was traditionally custom made and done entirely by hand, the term now commonly refers to high-end, unique designs. In France, Haute Couture refers to fashion houses that create exclusive, trend-setting designs. There, the term is protected by law and can only be used by fashion houses approved by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, or the Union Chamber of Haute Couture, an association created by Charles Frederick Worth, the original couturier of mid-nineteenth century France. Some currently approved Couture Ateliers are Chanel, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexandre Vauthier. Explore Mood's couture picks for the most unique and high-end items available.
